Kathmandu day hiking offers you fantastic mountain views and gives you opportunity to observe the real life of Kathmandu. The countryside of Kathmandu is rich in natural and cultural diversity. The terraces, typical villages and green forest are picturesque. Kathmandu valley is rich in traditional lifestyles and its cultures. The temples, monasteries and stupas are built in numerous numbers around the country sides. You can see the fields and the farmers working in the field and prayers praying in the monasteries.
Option 1: Namo Buddha hiking
Namoboudha, a hill top of Panauti is one of the major Buddhist pilgrimage. The stupa and shrines build up in this lovely little hill has significantly enough signs of its importance. It is a very ancient holy site where a legendary prince named Mahasattva offered himself to starving tigress with its several underfed cubs. This legendary episode is depicted in a very nice stone slab and placed right next to a holy stupa. After breakfast at the hotel, we drive 35 km east to Panuti and we follow the uphill trail forward north – east direction and the trail narrows. We cross a suspension bridge and pass through many small villages to a huge rice field which gives you chance to see how Nepali people plant and harvest the crop. From here we hike steep uphill for about an hour to reach Namoboudha. After lunch continue walk in easy trails to Dhulikhel, which is also a very scenic place. We then drive back to Kathmandu from Dhulikhel.
Option 2: Phulchowki hiking
After breakfast we drive 18 km from kathmandu valley to godawori, a botanical garden, and forward hike up to the hilltop. The summit is the highest point in Kathmandu valley. There are thick forests of rhododendron trees and orchids flowers on the trail. Its pleasant to see the colorful forest during flowering season (spring). You can find wide range of spices of birds around the forest.. Once you reach the top, you can see long chain range of himalayas from Everest to Annapurna. At the summit there is a Buddhist stupa and colorful flags offered by devotees. You can either descend to Godavari-about 3-hour walk or have a 4-wheel drive jeep pick you up at the summit. Walk up the hill takes about 4 hours.
Option 3: Shivapuri hiking
Shivapuri is the second highest hill top around Kathmandu valley. It is located north of Kathmandu. Hiking starts from Budanilkantha driving 15 minutes from Kathmandu. Visit temple of sleeping Vishnu. Start to ascend from the road head. The trail gradually climbs up to the fence boarder of Shivapuri forest and then it becomes moderately steep. After about one Hr of steep walk the trail becomes easier. The last part to trail is steep walk to the top. In average it takes about 4 hours to walk up to the summit and return in about 2 hours. The view from the nice and open grassy field at Shivapuri is impressive.
